Oh, sorry, after you do the 'extend CharBooleanType' you use the following:

@TypeDef(name = "j_n", typeClass = JaNaUserType.class)

and annotate your boolean field with: @Type(type = "j_n")

Thanks, org.hibernate.annotation.Type is what I was looking for.

One does not change JPA implementation every day, so I do thing that to have a few useful Hibernate annotations in the code is OK.

Nice. It's really a shame for a persistence framework not to support things as common as boolean directly.

Hint: You don't need to compare a boolean to true, so
this.enabled = enabled == true ? 'Y' : 'N';
can be simplified to

this.enabled = enabled? 'Y' : 'N';
