Java was not open till recent with the OpenJDK, we lived just fine before it and even if Oracle was to do the dumb thing an close it, we'll live just fine then too. The only real thing Oracle could do to 'damage' the field would be to shutdown java and they are too embedded with it themselves. My biggest worry with the Oracle buy out of Sun is MySQL (not that I totally care, I'm a Postgre user)..

There is something people aren't thinking about as well. IBM has invested more time and money into Java than Sun. I seriously doubt that IBM will let Java just fall by the way side. Java will be around for a long while. And it may end up splitting with the Open version backed by IBM, and the Oracle version. Wonder which one will win. :)
