The only real thing Oracle could do to 'damage' the field would be to shutdown java and they are too embedded with it themselves. IBM has invested more time and money into Java than Sun.  I seriously doubt that IBM will let Java just fall by the way side.  Java will be around for a long while.  And it may end up splitting with the Open version backed by IBM, and the Oracle version.
